A Book for CWSP PDF Print

Every once in a while, a new Wi-Fi book comes along that's worthy of the front page.  I've recently stumbled across one such book: "Implementing 802.1x Security Solutions for Wired and Wireless Networks " by Jim Geier.

802.1X/EAP is one of the most important security topics in Wi-Fi.  Implementation and troubleshooting of 802.1X/EAP is much more than it appears to be due to things like:

* Applications' sensitivity to latency while roaming
* Segmentation of users onto VLANs by group
* Implementation of role based access control

All of these start with a proper implementation of 802.1X/EAP.  In many implementations, you may also have to consider resiliency, where there may be multiple RADIUS servers or perhaps a RADIUS cluster.  Maybe the RADIUS cluster points to an LDAP database, such as an Active Directory cluster.  There may be many moving parts in an 802.1X/EAP solution, and each part has its own nuances and importance in the overall solution.  This book does a nice job of fleshing out these topics and giving easy-to-grasp analogies along the way.

Whether you're a CWSP candidate or a seasoned CWSP-certified industry professional, this book has something to offer.  There are so many great details that you may have missed along the way that will be helpful in troubleshooting and implementing Wi-Fi networks secured with 802.1X/EAP.  I highly recommend this book to everyone in the Wi-Fi industry.

Hey Jim,
I am using a Cisco ACS server using WPA2 (PEAP)authenication along with Cisco 4400 controllers. Would this book be a good resource for this environment? Thanks

It looks like a book I'd like to add to my resources and which I will probably get sometime. But it's too bad that the author spells 802.1X in the title incorrectly, undermining one's confidence in the author's expertise (which I'm sure is very good). It should be 802.1X instead of 802.1x. A little "x" would have meant an amendment to one of the 802.1 standards (e.g. 802.1p amending 802.1D). 802.1X is a standard unto itself. (Source: http://standards.ieee.org/getieee802/802.1.html) I wonder why didn't the editor catch this? Well, at least he is in good company... Cisco also can't get this right in a great majority of their printed and online publications and configuration GUIs.

Perhaps this can be corrected in the next edition.

Kind regards,
