Intrusion Detection Systems
Many protocol analyzers have been significantly expanded to analyze
not only the packets, but the events happening on the network as well. 
These events could be broadly categorized as security events and
performance events.  Wireless IDS may perform baseline testing,
inventory the devices on the wireless network, and track all
performance and security related events.  Most early models of protocol
analyzers were limited to software running on a single device. 
Recently, many manufacturers have released distributed systems that
use remote hardware and/or software probes reporting to a centralized
console.  
In today’s security- and performance-conscience organizations, it is
hard to justify not having such protocol and event analysis information
available to engineers and administrators.  Figure 1.7 below illustrates a
typical Wireless IDS console monitoring multiple sensors.
