DoD issued DoD Directive 8100.2 this spring to set standards for U S Military uses of commercial Wireless LAN's for Sensitive but Unclas (SBU) applications in the DoD Global Information Grid(GIG). A vendor neutral review of commercial wireless LAN hardware and software that is being used with Military encryption products to provide wireless LAN radios to the U S Military for high speed mobile communications shows that the most common solutions are IP-Sec VPN tunneling (Layer 3), or Layer 2 encryption solutions which meet FIPS 140-2 Information Assurance requirements. An overview of two leading edge hardware and software solutions is provided to show conclusively that a Layer 2 solution is far superior to IPSec in a wireless deployment.
