Wireless LAN technology plays a vital role in today's industrial data collection systems, carrying information from wireless client devices - such as handheld scanners or mobile computers - to corporate IT resources such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and Intranet websites. With this connection comes the need to verify that the wireless LAN only can be accessed by authorized users and that data transmitted over the network is protected from potential eavesdroppers. To ensure the security of a WLAN, its connection with wireless client devices must be authenticated and encrypted. This is accomplished via encryption protocols such as WPA, WPA2 and WEP in addition to the 802.1x authentication protocol. The 802.1x protocol blocks network access to unauthorized users, verifies the identity of authorized users and distributes encryption information to authorized users.
