  • Interesting story!

    read me

  • This article is excellent. I heard Phil Belanger tell this story (with his regrets) several years ago.

Another myth is this: "Wi-Fi and IEEE 802.11 is synonymous, just like Ethernet and IEEE 802.3."

The Alliance says "Wi-Fi CERTIFIED?¡é???¡é makes it Wi-Fi", not the IEEE. There are many IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN devices sold that are not certified, legally may not carry the Wi-Fi brand, and (I think) should not be considered Wi-Fi.

A case in point is Apple and their Airport product line. Exactly which iterations are Wi-Fi certified and which are not? I can't tell from the Wi-Fi Alliance website, nor did the Alliance offer to clarify the situation when I exchanged email with them.

I hope this helps. Thanks. /criss
