The 802.11a amendment specifies the use of OFDM with mandatory data rates of 6, 12 and 24 Mbps and a maximum of 54 Mbps. Data rates that are typically supported include 6,9,12,18,24,36,48 and 54 Mbps.

The 802.11g amendment specifies the use of both OFDM and DSSS. The OFDM mandatory data rates are 6, 12 and 24 Mbps and a maximum of 54 Mbps. OFDM data rates that are typically supported include 6,9,12,18,24,36,48 and 54 Mbps.

Because 802.11g must also support DSSS... the data rates of 11, 5.5, 2 and 1 Mbps are also 802.11g data rates.
