I was in conversation with a client and the conversation led to man in the middle attacks on public wireless hotspots.

Are there any easy ways to detect or prevent man in the middle attacks?

Or even if anyone knows of any theoretical ways to prevent these attacks with or without the use of WIDS (wireless intrusion detection systems)

Remeber this is for a standard public hotspot which you would find in a cafe.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.
