The newer Verizon Wireless PC cards are EV-DO 1XRTT 3G Wireless. As with WiFi, consider this type of wireless at layer2, how they limit Layer3 (IP) is up to the provider. Verizon has a number of restrictions on their 3G network (read the fine print before you sign that multi-year plan)

They recommend VPN on the support pages so they do support it

What they don't mention is what address space you are on. In Canada, most 3G wireless providers (EVDO, 1xRTT, GPRS, HSDPA) providers stick you on NATed space with no support for VPN so you have to pay $5/month for a public address or use SSL VPN. SSL VPNs are the way to go anyway these days to have a trouble-free secure connection from any foreign space wireless network.

Verizon does have interesting plans, bundle voice cellular and you get unlimited at $60/month! Not a bad deal; certainly makes 3G more somewhat more appealing that what's available currently in Canada ($100/month for 250 MB, then 3 cents per MB! that's $10/min of continous high speed use!) Although looking at the many, many restrictions on the plan, including "the right to limit throughput or amount of data transferred" it's far from being truly "unlimited" :-)

Latency on this type of network is still an issue with CDMA 3G based wireless data but I haven't had the chance to test Verizon's implementation. But then again, Verizon prohibits VOIP on their 1X/EVDO network so maybe latency isn't such a big issue! Sigh.

    Hope that helps.
