    Hi folks,
I've seen documentation that says the original 802.11 security standard was just Open & Shared Key authentication, and I've also seen those two plus WEP.

Can someone give me the straight scoop on this?

    Thank you,
    Craig

Keep in mind that WEP had (has?) three functions:

    Privacy (Encryption)
    Integrity (Detect data modification)
    Authenticaiton (only authorized STA's)

I find it best to keep the three separate.

Open system and shared key are two types of WEP authentication. Open system is well, open, and shared key just verifies that both parties have the same WEP (shared) key.

    Does that help?

    Unfortunately no.

Can you point me to an online reference to the original standard?

    Thank you,
    Craig
