    This is actually happens to be one of the two constraints of an Isotropical Radiator.

    I think the example given by gene, the sun light through a hole and magnifying glass is a very apt example.

    Another example would be a flashlight. Using a flashlight that has a bigger diameter, will spread the light on a wider area and will not go too far. (This for example, can be an antenna of 3dbi)

    But if you use a flashlight with the same power as the flashlight above, but with a small diameter, it focuses the light into a narrower path and the light doesn't spread over a wide area but can reach longer distances. This is what happens when you increase the gain of an antenna. (this can be an antenna of maybe 10dbi )
