  • We have a technology and engineering oriented university here. This is the topic of much conversation.

Bottom line: Computers is the one industry where experience gets irrelevant quick. So you programmed Univacs in COBOL with Hollerith cards - what have you done lately?

Computer Science degree is a fish wrapper after five years. If you don't sign on with a bleeding-edge technology firm before graduation, your knowledge stagnates; the technology moves on. A Computer Science degree demonstrates that you kept up with your classmates for four years while chasing a moving target. It says you can learn to a high standard set by others, but the industry cares about where you are and where you can take them. Where you have been is yesterdays news.

Techs run into the proverbial glass ceiling. If earning big later is your thing; MBA. If funds are tight and you want to start earning something right away, certs will cost less and keep you up with what's hot today.

Like Alice in Wonderland; you have to run to stand still in IT.
