• Dave,

I liked your audiocast, and one thing in particular caught my interest. It made me chuckle.

Years ago I used to hike a lot, before GPS was generally available. I can't tell you how many times I couldn't tell where north was, due to the heavy morning fog. Maps alone don't help too much if everywhere you can see (all five feet) is flat!

Several times I ran across people who didn't allow for magnetic variation and they wondered why they were lost.

To this day I carry a magnetic compass in my waist pack and in my earthquake supplies.

As far as contour maps go, I always waterproof them with stuff I can buy at outdoor type stores. It works great as long as you coat both sides, before the first side dries. The only preparation they need is to be folded in your preferred pattern before you waterproof them.

Keep up the great work !
