Everything I read tells me to not allow ad hoc wireless networking, understood. But, could someone explain the real security concerns associated with ad hoc wireless networks? Is there specific attacks for wireless ad hoc networks?

    Thanks,

  • just the meaning of the word "adhoc" implies the potential vulnerabilities. The design does not include an AP hence it is also referred to as an IBSS........Independent Basic Service Set. An adhoc network is synonymous to a peer to peer on the wired side, you have no centralized control, administration or security. Attacks such as peer attacks, eavesdropping and even simple DoS are just a few of the myriad of possibilities.Like everything else adhoc networking has its place, but the implementer must be aware of its correct usage. Basically it all comes down to.......what are you going to be using this network for? the value of your assets, compliance issues etc.
