  • Rather than build a business case to present to your boss (which seems to be what he's done to you first), counter with the question, "Would you rather me learn the technology first or the products first?" Then ask him/her the question, "Does it make sense for me to learn to drive a boat starting with a cruise liner?"

    My take on this is that the up-and-coming engineer should focus first on the technology itself - learning what features are available, what they do, and when/how to implement them, and THEN learn the mfr's gear which implements those features in a certain way. How can you appreciate and correctly use all of the myriad features available in today's WLAN systems when you don't know what all of the features are? Well, that's my $0.02 anyway. :-)
