  • I have a few Cisco 1200 series AP's that I use in class and for fun. My question is this: Is it possible to configure the AP to not go into or signal protection without disabling the 11b data rates? My guess is that if this config exists, it is in the command line.

The reason I started thinking about this is because while experimenting with a Linksys AP, I found that they will not go into or signal protection. At first I was a bit stunned that Linksys did something against the standards, but then I figured out why.

I believe that there is a point where having 11b STA's on the 11g BSS without going into protection is more efficient. Protection would be advantageous when certain, yet to be defined amount of DSSS traffic is present. To sum it up, I'm saying that in some cases, the solution is worse than the problem.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!
