    Perhaps you should just start with Wireshark. The software is free, and if you use a Linux computer, just about any NIC can work for you. If you want to stay with windows, just get an inexpensive AirPcap to get started. http://www.cacetech.com/products/airpcap.html the 'Classic' is only $198.

    It would be a great way to get started in looking at how the 802.11 protocol *really* works. Of course a great tool like AirMagnet would help as well, but if you are on a buget, try the AirPcap/Wireshark combination.
