I use iPerf and Airmagnet WiFi Analyzer Pro.
There is iperf out there, I havent used it but as I understand it you stream data from an iperf server through the wlan and see how it does, I know thats basic but its something I need to try out, I think its free.
iPerf is free, as is the GUI Versions kPerf and jPerf.
AirMagnet's Wi-Fi Analyzer as well as SurveyPro software can both be end-points to an iPerf server to capture Wi-Fi throughputs. Be careful where you put the iPerf server on your network. If you want to test only the Wi-Fi, you'll need it to be right behind the AP. If it is any further back in your network, you'll be testing both Wi-Fi and the network as well.
As i stated in my first reply I use iPerf and Airmagnet (both Survey and Analyzer actually depending on scenario). Sometimes I set up my iPerf-server on another laptop that also is wireless connected to the same WLAN.
