The following link is a pretty interesting read. The American Cable Association is supporting the effort to have the FCC open up more available in the 5 GHz band for the use of consumer gateways. Doing so would make it possible for transmission rates 1 Gbps.

I'm glad the ACA is supporting the expansion of the 5 GHz UNII bands, but I'd prefer that the FCC leave the power levels as they are currently.
Raising the output power and allowing outdoor use of the UNII-1 band, as the ACA suggests, will only hasten the degradation of the 5 GHz band to the point it is as crowded and poor as the 2.4 GHz band is today.
