Can a standalone MESH capable AP be used to extend WiFi signal from a ISP wireless modem\router? Has anyone tried this? Is it possible without using a fully implemented MESH system. Or, is it just more logical to utilize a Wifi Extender? Thanks!

A modern  multi-band Mesh system will out perform any RF based extender or repeater.   

There may be cases where a hardwired based Home-Plug system could match a lower speed Mesh network, but they never reach the same physical range possible.

As the number and proximity of interior Home-plug networks increase, the amount of interference also increases and lowers throughput..   

Remember that Power-Line or Home-Plug type communication still require encryption.
