I may be contrary to most people but one of the first things I recommend - is a method from the Japanese I was told.

In the West we are given Objectives first and then anser questions at the end of the chapter etc.

In the East is the opposite.  The answers are given along with the questions.

I'm really a fan of both and I do cross-train.

When I start a program I do a few things:

    1. I take those test questions provided till I understand the questions, the right answers and why, the wrong answers and why, etc.

    2. Then I pick through the books.  This works for me and tempts my palette.

    3. Now I'm ready to read the book for maximum effect and understanding.  Key terms and concepts are almost "highlighted" for me.

    It works for me.

I also find I retain the knowledge for an extended period of time.  That's the coolest part.

Being pretty good at trivia games is a side benefit.
