    yeah u r right that throughput is the actual data that is being send...in other words, the meaningful or useful part of the information signal that is sent across wired or wireless channel...but i dont agree that it is roughly haf the data rate, it depends upon the technique being used...

    Bandwidth is the size or space that is allocated to be used...like the diameter of a water pipe...the total water that can flow through it is the bandwidth, but if , due to some blockage, less water flows..then it is the throughput...(what an explanation!!!)

    Data rate is the speed at which the information (data+overhead) is sent across the allocated channel.....hope it helps...
