  • I have a friend who has a great amount of data on Hotspot activity. Their stats are showing above 80% of all connections have an 802.11a capability, but only 4-6% are actually using it over 802.11b.

    For any given distance, the 2.4GHz radios has a higher RSSI than the 5GHz and clients aren't smart enough to make the decision on their own to move to the 5GHz though lower RSSI Access Point.

    I've resorted to a 'Company' and 'Company-Fast' SSID mix to help the humans make the correct choice. It's been working pretty well.

    Amazingly, some folks still choose the 'slow' option - perhaps I'll have to start calling it 'Company-Slow-Don't-Choose-This' as the new SSID for the 2.4GHz APs.
