    remember, you are only scrambling the data payload. header information and the like must remain plaintext to allow the differing devices (routers/switches/accesspoints/nics) to properly manage the transmission of those frames.

    actually, my initial response is wrong. while the presentation layer is responsible for encryption, wep is a layer 2, mac layer, encryption standard. still studying what if anything it would do with an ethernet frame (if it encapsulates it or not), but with respect to wep, it is at layer 2. the encryption is only client to access point and not end-to-end.

    and it looks like and ethernet frame, while not encapsulated, has major components copied over and placed into a 802.11 frame. check out rfc 1042 and 802.11h.

  • All encryption for WEP and WPA is done strictly and only at layer 2 (MAC sublayer). The new CWAP Study Guide explains this in the most ridiculous detail. :-) You can buy it from our website.
