Today saw the beginning of a new era in the history of NASA and possibly telecommunications. The chap who started PayPal is behind it. If they can get the costs down compared with some of the other big operators, it could benefit everyone. Although the initial project is to have the launch vehicle carry cargo to the International Space Station, there is the possibility that telecommunications satellites could be launched in the future. Although in the US and most of Europe, backhaul WAN links mostly run on fiber now, in developing countries, satellite communications provide the vast majority of the backhaul links.
I watched the launch from my backyard on a cold clear Florida afternoon.
