  • Ever wondered how you might watch a fast BSS transition with an 802.11 protocol analyzer? There are two easy ways...

    1) Set your protocol analyzer to scan, and then only enable scanning on 2 channels (the two channels your client device will transition between). Then, position your analyzer where it can hear both APs fairly well while doing this 2-channel scanning. Set your scan time to something like 10ms, which should be adequate to catch a handoff between APs.

    2) Put two 802.11 a/b/g cards in your analyzer (provided your analyzer will allow simultaneous use of 2 or more cards). Each card must be different so as to require separate drivers. Then, your analyzer must see both and capture on each independently. This is often physically difficult due to PC Card slot real estate in most laptops...which is why I like option #1 above better.
