On January 1, 2014 new Energy Star specifications take effect.   As some of you probably know, several governments now, or will shortly, require that electronic devices  meet them.

How will this affect line-powered WLAN equipment?  We've always been advised to NOT put these into a Power Save Mode, because of the effect it will have on other networked devices - e.g. increased latency, etc.

Has anyone heard of any new programs by WLAN equipment companies to address these edicts ?

  • Not seen anything around energy star but I do know you can as a minimum turn off the radios etc on a schedule. Not sure how this would impact latency as lets assume you had a 9-5 office rather than a 24/7 warehouse or manufacturing facility. Switching off your WLAN could be acceptable.
